Rural Outdoor Education – Gerry Gibson Memorial Award

LDFGA President Dwayne Davison accepts the Rural Outdoor Education Gerry Gibson Memorial Award from AWF

This award is awarded to the rural club or individual that has done an outstanding job teaching outdoor education programs in Alberta. The LDFGA has shown outstanding leadership in rural outdoor education and their commitment to inspiring the next generation of conservation-minded youth. The LDFGA has made a remarkable impact by sponsoring young people to attend Provincial Youth Outdoor Leadership & Conservation Camps. These camps offer hands-on instruction in archery, canoeing, air rifle and pistol shooting, wildlife and plant identification, survival skills, fisheries studies, map and compass use, GPS navigation, and even camp cooking. Through these immersive experiences, rural youth gain confidence, practical skills, and a deep understanding of responsible outdoor practices.

Their dedication doesn’t stop there. Each year, the LDFGA hosts a Youth Outdoor Activity Day, giving young participants the chance to learn wilderness skills, pellet gun safety, orienteering,
and outdoor recreation in a safe and supportive environment. For many rural children, these programs provide rare access to structured outdoor education and meaningful exposure to
Alberta’s natural resources.

By combining skill development, conservation awareness, and leadership training, the Lloydminster club is shaping capable, ethical, and enthusiastic future stewards of Alberta’s fish
and wildlife.
