Conservation Award – Gordon Lund Memorial Award

LDFGA Director Bill Armstrong accepts the Conservation Award – Gordon Lund Memorial Award from SWF
Presented annually to the person who, by thought, effort, or deed, is considered to have contributed the most towards the conservation of Saskatchewan’s renewable natural resources (i.e. someone who spends countless hours teaching our youth about wildlife and conservation, a certain person who has spearheaded an ongoing project and has stuck with it from beginning to end, etc.).
Bill came to Lloydminster to teach high school physical education, coach football, and track and field in 1968 and continued that for his entire career. He is a life long big game hunter and fisherman. It is this love of teaching kids and helping seniors that has led to him being synonymous with 3 of our most well known programs. Since 2004 Bill has headed up and organized a large number of volunteers to provide our 2 day “Youth Outdoor Activity Day” which encompasses orienteering, archery, outdoor camping skills, and air rifle safety and shooting. He organizes the activities, advertises it throughout the community, and handles all the paperwork. He spends multiple days readying the sites and even drives the school bus to ensure the participants have a safe and enjoyable experience.
Bill also chairs and pours his heart into preparing and promoting our annual Fish Fry. He takes great pride in seeing seniors and the general public who often do not have the opportunity to fish gather for a delicious meal. We offer this event as a community service rather than a fundraiser.
Our Scholarship Program, which has run since 1994, presents two $1000 scholarships to post secondary candidates who are pursuing their education in the environmental and natural resource fields. Bill has been the chair for many of these years. In addition to his signature programs, he has regularly volunteered for work bees, convention organizing, our annual banquet and awards night, the gun show, and special projects such as installing duck nests and taking seniors fishing.
Bill has a member of our executive since 1994, serving as president in 1996/97/98, and 2012/13. Our club recognized him with a Life Membership to our Branch in 2007.
Bill truly fulfils the SWF mission statement “to ensure the wildlife legacy we leave to our children surpasses that which we inherited.”
